Installing a backsplash can be a rewarding project that enhances the look of your kitchen, laundry room or bathroom. We’ve installed many backsplash tiles over the last few years, and strong believe it can level up your living space.
On this topic, we’d like to mention that our list of recommended backsplash tools is a great guide for those who may want to DIY the installation of backsplash in their home or office.
Preparing the Area and Surface
We begin by covering the area and counter with our protective covering to ensure we keep that area protected from any damage or glue residue. We then will prep the surface of the wall for the tiling process. If there are outlet covers or imperfections on the wall that may be an issue – those will be removed and/or fixed.
Plan the Tile Design
It is imperative to plan the tiling process so that there are no hiccups or obstacles in the tiling process. This is done by considering the tile size, material and layout of the kitchen. This will allow us to plan where to begin the first tile, and in which direction to begin the installation. In this step, there is some prep work involved with using a laser level.
Applying Tile Adhesive
We use a notched trowel to layer the tile glue/adhesive, and ensure that we are working in small sections. Every job is different, so the trowel used will vary. Our backsplash installers understand the curing time for our glue/adhesive and can make sure the glue does not dry out on them.
Cut and Place Tiles
As it applies, we will cut the tiles and place them on the thin-set mortar or glue. The cutting of tiles uses a specialized tool, and would be required when installing backsplash around outlets, range hoods and ends. Some tiles may also need to be cut in odd shapes, depending on the obstacle.
Applying Grout
We use premixed grout for our backsplash installation projects. The grout is applied using a rubber float, while pressing it into the grout line. Once the grout is applied, we use a wet sponge to wipe the grout off the tile surface. If the grout hardens on the tile surface – it can be quite difficult to remove the next day.
Apply Grout Sealer
Once the grout has dried and has been cleaned off smoothly; we recommend spraying on grout and tile sealer. The sealer would provide a protective coating to protect the grout line and tiles from stains and discoloration.
Caulking
If there are gaps between the tile and countertop, these are filled with waterproof caulking.
